Back in my newbie days, I made some big mistakes that I want to share with you in case it can save you the hassle (and pain!) that I experienced. When I first started, there wasn’t a quick way to learn the basics, so I learned by making mistakes. In the meantime, I kept great notes so that I could make this easier on Momeopaths ® following in my footsteps.
Let’s start with my first mistake: Taking a remedy based on what the label says. It’s tricky because this could absolutely work perfectly for you, however, because homeopathy is a system of medicine that takes into consideration the entire body, there are many symptoms that lead to determining which remedy to take.
For example, if you were to get a bottle of homeopathic Rhus tox, it says “traditionally used for cold sores and arthritis pain improved by movement.” These are two very good indications for selecting Rhus tox, but let’s say your cold sore came from eating too many sweets, you may need Nat mur. If your cold store burns, it may be a Cantharis remedy. If your cold store develops pus and is painful, then maybe Hepar sulph would work. The remedy would be determined by your symptoms, and not all cold sores are alike! This is why homeopathy is such a fine-tuned medicine. With conventional medicine, a cold sore is a cold sore. With homeopathy, we have to get very clear on how the cold sore is presenting.
You may be wondering why then do these remedies have the indications on it? The answer is because the FDA requires manufacturers to put an indication on the bottle. The rules and regulations in the drug world have been tailored especially for pharmaceutical drugs, not homeopathic medicine, so homeopathy unfortunately is pushed to conform to the norms in that world. It makes it super confusing to newbies, of course! The bottom line is that we don’t want to simply go by what the label says.
This is also one of the biggest reasons that people say “homeopathy doesn’t work.” When we’re simply reading labels, we’re missing the finer intricacies of selecting a remedy. I share some tips on how to make this process easier in my Intro to Homeopathy Class to make this process easier for newbies. Homeopathy asks us to really understand our symptoms, and more than just the physical symptoms. When we look at a remedy in a Materia medica we will see entries for physical ailments, but also mental and emotional as well. It’s a complex system, and it helps us to deepen our connection with our bodies as we tune into our symptoms, so we can determine what remedy matches those symptoms.
