Everything But The Kitchen Sink

Hey everyone! Today I’m going to talk about a slightly unpopular topic. Here’s the deal. When you’re bit by the homeopathy bug, you’re in love. You are so eager to learn more and more and more and you almost hope your family members get sick because you really want to use and practice the remedies. This is a good thing. Once you realize that you don’t need to bow down to big pharma and chemical medicine, it’s so darn exciting!

I have sooo been there and to have a passion for homeopathy is really a wonderful thing, and it’s why you’re here. But I also want to caution you. Homeopathy is medicine and it does have the power to cure, but anything that has the power to cure can also cause trouble if not used in the correct way.

One of the best lessons I have learned is that we can’t apply what conventional medicine has taught us—to take a pill for every ill—to our application of homeopathic medicine.

I have been to both extremes. I used to be very liberal with my usage of remedies and then I’ve gotten more conservative over the years. I want to share why I’ve become more conservative when it comes to prescribing and taking homeopathic remedies.

The Dangers of a Pill for every Ill

I read this great article once by Sarah Pope, her blog is The Healthy Home Economist. https://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/the-do-nothing-approach-to-illness-your-ticket-to-wellness/

She talks about how her father, a retired family physician, advocated the do nothing approach. She said in her article,

“Old school medicine is to do nothing and let the illness run its course, focus on rest and nourishment, and intervene only if it becomes evident that the patient cannot handle the situation on his/her own. My Dad’s rule of thumb was to wait 2 weeks before doing anything therapeutically to facilitate the conclusion of the illness.”

She also references Dr. Thomas Cowan when she said that, “illness is actually beneficial to the body and is a way for valuable detoxification to occur so that an improved level of vitality and maturity can be experienced by the child once the illness is over.”

Now, keep in mind homeopathy is encouraging your body to move through that same process naturally. It is still allowing the body to detoxify and experience that vitality and maturity.

So while there is nothing wrong with giving a homeopathic medicine, I do think that there is a problem when we RUSH to the homeopathy kit whenever someone gets sick. This rushing to the natural medicine cabinet is a symptom of our mistrust with the body. We are still stuck in the state of conventional medicine.

Putting Trust in our Bodies

Remember that our natural state is health. Don’t let your bias or your fear lead you away from knowing that. We really should develop a relationship of trust with our body, and let that trust grow.

How do we do that? We need to first calm our fears, and you do that by blessed observation. Look at what is happening now, not what you think will happen, or all of the millions of what ifs.

Then, during that blessed observation, if the body gets stuck, then yes, you can look to a homeopathic remedy. But I really think that we need the body to be stuck before we give a homeopathic remedy. It is medicine, and it is powerful, and we should wait until our body needs it before jumping to it.

Let me give you a couple of examples:

Your kid gets a splinter, and you know you can give silicea for that splinter. But the splinter really doesn’t need a remedy unless it’s too painful or it’s stuck, not coming out, getting pussy and really irritating.

Here is another one. Let’s say your kid has a fever. Well, he or she doesn’t really need a remedy right away…the whole point of homeopathy is to teach your body how to heal itself and sometimes your body IS healing itself. Just wait and watch. If the body is already doing a good job by itself, then just step back unless it appears to become stuck.

Of COURSE, there are exceptions to the rule of ‘wait and do nothing’. Like if there is a tick bite, I will give a few doses of ledum 30c because of the concern over lyme disease. Or maybe if we ate some food that we know was bad and tainted, when other people were getting sick, I might give a dose of arsenicum 30. Or maybe you’re about to go on your dream vacation and someone is coming down with something—I wouldn’t begrudge jumping on the proper remedy to try and nip it in the bud.

So there are exceptions, but what I worry about is that most of the time, jumping to a remedy seems to be the rule. Guys, if you learn about 1 million homeopathic remedies but you don’t learn to trust your body, you’ve failed. Homeopathy helps us rebuild trust with our body’s own healing abilities. Your natural state is health, and we need to strive for that.

Finding the Correct Remedy

I also want to talk very briefly about how we can find remedies and how we can recommend remedies.

I feel a bit concerned when I hear people asking for help for chronic conditions. It really is beyond the scope of someone who is untrained to provide recommendations for chronic conditions or complex acutes. If something has been going on for longer than 3 weeks, it’s a chronic condition. Even a cough that you’ve had for two weeks, but it comes back every year during spring allergy seasons is actually a chronic thing. Always work with a qualified professional homeopath in these situations.

In true acute situations, however, I want to be a resource for you to LEARN how to select remedies. I really want you to know how to select remedies. So here is a quick crash course:

  1. Look at your symptoms and prioritize the most concerning ones. Like if you have a mastitis infection, a fever, you’re thirsty, and you have aches all over your body, prioritize the worst one…the mastitis infection.
  2. Use the internet to do a search for the terms “Homeopathy” + the symptom. Or google “online materia medica”
  3. When you ask for recommendations in my facebook group, provide a list of symptoms, indicating which ones are most concerning. Take time to observe and provide modalities. Modalities are what makes the symptoms better or worse. Like bumping the breast makes it worse, resting and not moving helps.
  4. Keep your information really organized when you post your question. Maybe even mention the remedies you’re considering or if you’ve tried them.
  5. Don’t be offended if someone says that working with a homeopath is the best bet. We all really want to help you but if you’re not progressing or if the illness is a chronic one or a complex acute, it may be beyond our scope and it may not be in your best interest to get random internet people to help you.
    • My friend, when she had a mastitis infection, was struggling to find the correct remedy. She had actually tried Bryonia, decided that the remedy wasn’t right for her and had moved on. After talking to her a few times on the phone and me really taking her case momeopath style, I realized that she did INDEED need Bryonia—she just needed it in a higher potency or she needed to take it more frequently. But if she had posted in a fb group, it’s very possible that this realization may have been missed. And if she would have asked, she could have gotten suggestions for 5+ different remedies and thrown all those remedies at her situation. This could have caused more problems for her.
  6. Even when you get suggestions from a group, be diligent. Look up each remedy and make sure it fits your symptoms before blindly taking it. An online group is not permission to be lazy and just get your quick answers. I want to teach you how to fish, not just give you a fish. I want you to become momeopaths!
