I hate changes. They’re stressful. They mean the routine I’ve worked so hard to get into gets thrown out the window. It’s stressful for kids too. Most of the time, back-to-school is not a fun season. In fact, I’m already having my own panic attacks about all the driving I’m going to have to do for basketball and cross country and piano and co-op and more!
So today I’m going to talk about some tips about how I prepare for school—with and without homeopathy.
I want to share my top tips including
- What I do to ease into it
- What homeopathic remedies to take and
- What non-homeopathy things to do.
Easing Into the School Year
I like doing the plus-one method of easing into school. For those unfamiliar with this method, it essentially means to start off small and incrementally increase the work load as time goes on. It helps to take what otherwise might look like an insurmountable amount of effort and break it down into manageable, approachable chunks. Typically, co-op is pretty easy and it’s not overwhelming to start doing the assignments that go with that program. However, there are other things we do alongside our co-op program and altogether it can start to seem daunting.
So to keep my kids feeling motivated, I will start with:
- Doing our read aloud sessions as a family. And we do this hard core for one week.
- Then we add another task the next week. This can be our homeopathy lessons.
- Then we add one new thing the next week. That may be our co-op.
And this pattern continues on until you find the right balance for your family!
I just think it’s a lot to expect your kids to jump into the perfect routine on week one. It adds so much unnecessary stress. So I think any time you can gentle the journey that’s the way to do it!
I also think it’s important not to overschedule things. Keep it simple. Honestly, the best book I read about homeschooling was Sarah Mackenzie’s book, Teaching from Rest. I highly recommend it. It’s such a great way to ease into your homeschooling year and not put too much pressure on yourself.
Homeopathic Remedies
OK, but here is where homeopathy can help too. There are some really great remedies to address some common hurdles to starting a new school year.
Calc phos: I’ve been told that this is the top remedy to consider when your kids are not wanting to go to school. This also counts for co-op. A lot of times they may actually develop headaches or tummy aches that are bad enough that they will need to stay home from school. This is usually for younger kids.
The next two remedies are pretty similar, and they’re some of the top remedies people think of when they think of going back to school. That’s because they are standard ‘stage fright’ remedies, or what they call, anticipatory anxiety.
Argentum nitricum or Gelsemium: Both feel very nervous. Both have diarrhea and maybe gas with their anxiety. They’re both similar, so take some time to look in your materia medica and compare symptoms. Ultimately, if you’re not sure and you need to pick one, go with Gelsemium.
Aconite: This is for when your kid is really freaked out and scared. You can see their eyes are wide and panicky. Look for rapid heart beat, panic attacks, or like they’re having a hard time breathing.
Arsenicum: This is another great remedy to consider. They have the restlessness that Aconite has but not quite so panicked. They are pretty insecure and they may even alternate between restlessness and exhaustion. So if there is that tiredness involved, you may want to consider Arsenicum.
Lycopodium: While it doesn’t get mentioned a ton, this is a really interesting remedy, especially in adults. This is a remedy that is particularly helpful when someone’s scared about looking dumb or not appearing smart enough in front of others. Lycopodium people tend to cover up this fear by coming off overly confident. Because they’re so stressed about how they will be seen by others, they tend to prepare well and then ultimately ‘perform’ well, but they still have lots of anxiety.
Before we move on, let me just remind you that you (and your kids) can learn a lot of remedies and so much more in my curriculum. They will be healthier for it. Here’s a testimonial from a Momeopath that has used my curriculum.
“Learning with you is so, so, so good. Like learning from a friend. I was kind of thrown into the very deep end of the pool when I first learned homeopathy…and I had to swim very fast to keep up with the hard core homeopathy moms who had been doing this for many years. I love your teaching style because it all felt familiar to me even though I literally started this journey at the beginning of Feb. I love your teaching style! “

Non-Homeopathic Helps
There are also some really great tips outside of the world of homeopathy to make for a successful start to the school year. And my favorite part about these tips is that they are really things you can get into the groove with right now—no need to wait!
First, I think really good nutrition is critical. I love colostrum and all of the ways it helps nourish our bodies. Watch my free webinar on colostrum if you’d like to learn more.
I also think getting kids to bed early is so helpful. Start doing that now so it’s not a big shock on everyone. Get yourself to bed early too. Those early mornings are just as hard on mom—if not more so!
I recommend planning your meals for a month’s worth of dinners before that first month. Plan it, make your lists, set them aside, and get ahead of it so you don’t have to divert too much brain power into meals while you are in the thick of it. Use your instant pot!
And finally, don’t put too much pressure on yourself or your kids. You might not get to everything that you wanted to. Adjustments will have to be made. Each year is a learning experience for the both of you. You’ve got this momma!
